Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
